International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)

SIDE International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI).jpg

In line with the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI), over the next year NHS Tayside will implement new descriptors for managing dysphagia with support from speech & language therapy and nutrition & dietetic services.

IDDSI is a method of standardising the terminology used for diets for people with swallowing difficulties in order to improve patient safety. As part of this, there will be a move to a single product for thickening fluids – Nutilis Clear.

Ward based training has been arranged for the switch to the new product. All relevant staff are encouraged to attend these sessions.

Throughout this process information will appear on the Tayside Nutrition website.

NHS Tayside shines at National Six Essential Actions ‘Big Brag’ event

NHS Tayside’s team at the ‘Big Brag’ event

A multi professional team from NHS Tayside attended the Scottish Government’s National 6 Essential Actions ‘Big Brag’ event in Edinburgh to showcase improvements in how patients access health and social care services in a timely way.

The 6 Essential Actions have been set out as part of a programme to improve unscheduled care across Scotland. The ‘Big Brag’ event, which was attended by over 300 health and social care delegates, gave staff the opportunity to share the impact of the programme so far.

A team from Tayside manned three tables at the event, presenting their local improvement work, exchanging ideas and knowledge with other delegates and championing their local passion for improvement.

The three Tayside tables covered Driving Daily Dynamic Discharge (DDD) in PRI Medicine, Ward 19 in Ninewells Hospital and the Integrated Discharge Hub in Dundee.

Senior charge nurse Billy Gibson, Medicine for the Elderly consultant Dr Dirk Habicht, improvement advisor Stuart McAllan and service improvement lead Paul Arbuckle also presented a masterclass on NHS Tayside’s approaches to designing and implementing systematic improvement processes.

Oral Health Improvement Team supports Smile Month

NHS Tayside is encouraging families to share photos of their children’s smiles and toothbrushes as part of National Smile Month (14 May – 14 June).

National Smile month, which is run by oral health charity the Oral Health Foundation, aims to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health by raising awareness of important health issues.

NHS Tayside’s Oral Health Improvement Team hopes the annual awareness month will encourage families across Tayside to register babies and young children with their local dentist.

To raise awareness, the team are inviting people to share photos of their children’s grins on their NHS Tayside Oral Health Improvement Team Facebook page throughout the month. You can visit the page at www.facebook.com/oralhealthtayside

NHS Tayside Principal Coordinator (National Dental Strategies) Donna Kirk said, “Health visitors provide oral health messages to children along with a toothbrush, toothpaste and free flow cup at around four-months-old and parents are advised to register their children at the dentist.

“Taking your child to the dental practice as early as possible helps them to get used to the sights, sounds and smells of a dental practice and it will give parents access to information, advice and support to look after their child’s teeth.

“At the dental practice, you will be given advice and support from the dental team, who will show you how you can help your child keep healthy teeth and stop them suffering tooth decay in the future.

“There are many parents with dental anxiety. Taking their children to a check up and prevention appointment helps them to see their children enjoy toothbrushing and a chat.”
