Volunteer John MacGillivray celebrated his 90th birthday at his welcome desk post with a card and balloons from Chief Executive Grant Archibald and staff from Ninewells Voluntary Services.

John has been a Welcome Desk volunteer for just over five years. He worked as a consultant pathologist all over the UK before coming to Ninewells in 1974, where he remained until his retirement in 1990.

After retiring John began volunteering and helped at various projects including Meals on Wheels, Age Concern and as a guide on RRS Discovery. The Welcome Desk is now his only volunteering role.

John said, “I find my volunteering role at Ninewells very interesting. I enjoy speaking to and interacting with people at the Welcome Desk.”

Grant Archibald said, “I would like to thank John for his years of volunteering on top of his years of service as a valued staff member. His dedication to helping others is hugely impressive and I’m delighted and honoured to be here today to help John celebrate his 90th birthday.”

Voluntary services manager Val Ewan added, “We are very grateful to John giving up his time every week to help patients and visitors by meeting people coming into Ninewells and providing directions to wards and appointments. I would like to wish John a very happy 90th birthday.”
