A new appendix giving advice on PPE has been published in the National Infection Prevention and Control Manual.
Appendix 16 ‘Best Practice – Aide Memoire for levels of PPE for healthcare workers when providing patient care’ outlines the recommended PPE required to minimise the risk of
cross-transmission of infection to self and others when providing patient care.
Example infectious agents and clinical scenarios are provided for each level of PPE however clinical decisions made by staff regarding use/non-use of PPE will depend on a risk assessment which should include e.g. the presenting symptoms, risk of acquisition and the availability of treatment.
