Best Start Grant Pregnancy and Baby Payment – is a three payment package aimed at supporting lower-income families by giving them extra money during the early years of a child’s life.
Social Security Scotland will be taking applications for the Pregnancy and Baby Payment from Monday, 10 December 2018. Applications can be made via a freephone helpline on 0800 182 2222, by post or online at mygov.scot/pregnancy-and-baby-grant.
The Pregnancy and Baby Payment replaces the UK Government’s Sure Start Maternity Grant for low income families in Scotland.
It will help with expenses in pregnancy or of having a baby. £600 will be paid on the birth of a first child and £300 for second and subsequent children. The Best Start Grant places no limit on the number of children that are supported.
This new initiative has extended eligibility to include anyone on tax credits or housing benefits and all under 18s and 18 or 19 year olds in full time education or training and still on their parent’s benefit claim.
It has also widened the application window from the 24th week of pregnancy to 6 months after the birth, giving those eligible longer to apply.
