The Welcome Desk at Ninewells Hospital has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special reception for the volunteers who run the service.
The Welcome Desk was introduced to enhance the excellent service provided by the main reception on the concourse at Ninewells. The first volunteers began their training 10 years ago and some of the original group are still volunteering on the desk.
To mark this milestone a celebration event was held at Ninewells and Chief Executive Malcolm Wright met with the volunteers to thank them for their service over the past decade.
Malcolm said, “I was delighted to meet with our welcome volunteers to celebrate their 10th anniversary at Ninewells. The volunteers provide a valuable service and we very much appreciate them giving up their time to help patients, visitors and staff at the hospital.”
Volunteers offer assistance to patients and members of the public who may need support to find their way around the hospital. They give directions to ward and clinic areas as well as escorting people to their destinations if required.
The Welcome Desk is staffed by volunteers Monday to Friday, providing assistance to around 450 patients and visitors every week.
Voluntary services manager Val Ewan said, “Ninewells is such a large building and it can be daunting if people are not sure where they are going. Visitors and patients can be anxious and we do not want to add further anxiety to their visit.
“The volunteers work closely with the staff on main reception to help get people to where they need to be and we are very grateful for all the work these volunteers do to support the staff, patients and visitors.”
