A group of clinicians from the cardiology department at Ninewells has received national recognition for their research work.

The cardiovascular research group of Professor Chim Lang, Dr AnnaMaria Choy, Dr Ify Mordi and Dr Zaid Iskandar will have a strong presence at the British Cardiovascular Society Annual Conference 2018 next month, with a nomination for the Young Investigator Award and three abstracts selected for oral presentation.

Dr Ify Mordi, who is an honorary specialty registrar at Ninewells as well as NHS Education for Scotland/Chief Scientist Office clinical lecturer in cardiology, has been selected as a finalist in the highly prestigious Young Investigator Award for his abstract “Repurposing the diabetes drug metformin for treatment of adverse left ventricular remodelling in cardiovascular disease”.

Three abstracts from the group have also been selected for oral presentation as “Best of the Best” in their categories: the British Heart Foundation-funded MET-REMODEL trial (Mohapradeep Mohan), a Tenovus-funded study evaluating the diagnostic and prognostic utility of desmosine in abdominal aortic aneurysm (Zaid Iskandar, Ify Mordi, Jeffrey Huang, AnnaMaria Choy) and the NIHR-funded REACH-HF trial (Lang).

In addition Dr Mordi has also been awarded a place on the Scottish Crucible 2018, a national multi-disciplinary forum for future academic research leaders, joining other early career researchers from across the country.
